Whoever among you wants to be greater, shall be servant to all!” – Metropolitan of Strumica Naum

Then the sons of Zebedee, James and John, approached Him, and said, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.” And He asked them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” They answered Him, “Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand, and the other on Your left, in Your glory.” But He said to them, “You do not know what you ask” (Mark 10: 35-38). Indeed, some people do not know what they ask for, some people who overlook that if their request is granted ( supposedly), that they should sit ahead of the Mother of God ( Birth Giver of God – Bogorodica) and the Baptist of God. “To sit on My right or on My left, it is not Mine to give; But it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father “(Matthew 20:23). Hence ( indeed), it does not depend on God either, but on the ones who will accomplish, freely and lovingly, God’s established criteria for unity and communion with Him.

And what do we see today on the church iconostas – an icon of the Kingdom of Heaven: Who sits on the right and on the left side of Christ? The apostle is not sitting- even if he was either Peter or Paul, not a holy bishop, that is, there is not a representative of the external priesthood seated; no one else is seated, but the first and perfect bearers of the inner, true New Testament, Eschatological (eternal) and royal priesthood – the Most Holy Bogorodica and Ever Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist. Only through the bearers of this priesthood in the Church, and through them in the world and in its history, works the only ceaseless Liturgy, that is, the Father’s providence of our salvation, which works through the Son in the Holy Spirit.

Now, at least, I see no difference in honor, as I see a difference in obedience, between the first and the second (right) place, because Christ is sitting in Her lap; but between the second ( Bogorodica) and third ( on the left of Christ – St John the Baptist) I see that the second is greater in honor than the cherubim and incomparably more glorious than the seraphim. Although with what is written it is possible to contravene some of the readers (the ones that do not know), I’m sure that I will not offend anyone from the mentioned here ( The Mother of God – Bogorodica and St John the Baptist etc) – on the contrary. And the fourth place is still open …

“It does not depend on Me but on those for which it is prepared.” This means that the Lord gives us the opportunity to build a perfect personal relationship with Him, but this depends on how much one wants to open himself / herself before God and how much one wants to give himself to God. In other words, it depends on us, what kind of relationship we want to build with God: whether Father-son, trade, or slave relationship. There is no predestination. It all depends on us.

“You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.

Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant.

And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all.

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Mark 10, 42-45).

Holy Mother of God, through the prayers of St. Mary of Egypt, save us!
